At the Woodford Folk Festival a few years ago, a brother and a sister, trying to get some sleep in their tent, heard the sounds of a violin playing nearby. Captivated by the sound, the two went out to meet the person behind the sound. And Tinpan Orange was born.

For years before, Emily Lubitz had been lending her remarkable, clear pipes to her brother Jesse's guitar; now, with violinist Alex Burkoy in tow, the three set about creating their own kind of accomplished, gypsy-inflected acoustic folk-pop, a graceful, unhurried melding of sounds that has quietly garnered them a loyal following.

In 2007, the group struck out with Death, Love and Buildings, a spacious and rich record that had Renee Geyer singing their praises. In 2009, Tinpan Orange returned with The Bottom Of The Lake, their second lp. Produced by Harry Angus (Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson), The Bottom Of The Lake is a work of elegant restraint and subtle virtuosity, its arrangements unfolding with grace and surety, carried by Lubitz's exquisite voice.
