This Movie Is Broken: New Movie Feat. Broken Social Scene
Posted: 27 May, 2010
When you're as big and chaotic as Canadian indie luminaries Broken Social Scene, sometimes just releasing records isn't enough: you need other, more expansive ways to tell the story. Last year, Arts & Crafts released an exhaustive history of the band, This Book Is Broken, written by Pitchfork scribe Stuart Berman; now word has reached us that a film of almost the same name, This Movie Is Broken, will be making its way to our screens very soon.
Director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool, Hard Core Logo) and Don McKellar (Last Night, Twitch City, The Drowsy Chaperone) joined forces to create This Movie Is Broken, which combines a memorable summer performance by Broken Social Scene in their native Toronto with the story of a summertime romance between two old friends.

The film's story centres on Bruno (Greg Calderone) and Caroline (Georgina Reilly), who wake up on a makeshift rooftop bed one morning having slept together for the first time. For Bruno, it's the culmination of a lifelong desire to be with Caroline; only problem is, she's headed back to Paris the next day –– for good. Bruno has 24 hours to make his case.
Enter some free backstage passes to an open-air Broken Social Scene concert, which features what might be considered a pretty full cast of the BSS family: Feist, Metric's Emily Haines and Amy Millan all make appearances. To capture the feel of the Toronto summer, the filmmakers asked Toronto kids to send in videos of what they felt to be the essence of the time, some of which now make up part of the finished product.
The film premiered at SXSW, and has already garnered some glowing reviews. No words on an Australian release yet, but we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
In more local BSS news, three side shows have been announced for Broken Social Scene's upcoming Forgiveness Rock Record/Splendour tour. Lucky Melbournians will get two chances to get the BSS experience; Sydneysiders just the one. For everyone else, you have a couple of months to hatch some plans! The dates:
01/08/10 Splendour In The Grass, Woodford, QLD
02/08/10 Corner Hotel, Melbourne
03/08/10 Corner Hotel, Melbourne
04/08/10 Metro, Sydney
