Several questions for... Big Scary

2010 is turning out to be a huge year for rising Melbourne two-piece Big Scary. Fresh from a bunch of high-profile supports, including with the UK's Florence and the Machine, the duo are now lighting out in their own tour in support of their excellent new ep, At The Mercy of the Elements, and have a whole bunch of new material in the works.

Featuring the singles Hey Somebody and Falling Away, as well as the beautifully sonorous title track, At The Mercy of the Elements has been generating a lot of buzz in Melbourne and around the country since its release. The ep gets the official launch treatment at the Workers Club in Fitzroy on 26 February, with support from the Villainares and Bean. From there, Tom and Jo will play a few launch dates in NSW, before returning to Vic to play the Pushover festival. April and May will see the band heading out on a rather large national tour with fellow blues rockers The Vasco Era. (Full dates here.)

Then there's the new recordings. In a recent blog post, Tom said Big Scary this year would be releasing a series of seasonal-themed eps, and that they've already headed in the studio to lay down tracks for the Autumn and Summer editions. We'll keep you posted.

We caught up with Big Scary recently, who told us about their new keyboard, their desire to tour in bygone eras, and their profound love for cheese.

My favourite song right now:

The Jezabels' Hurt Me & Port O'Brien's I Think My Will is Good.

My current musical obsession:

Our new keyboard. When no one's watching, I press the Demo button and pretend like I'm performing the whole thing to a crowd of thousands.

A great, under recognized record:

Sheryl Crow: Tuesday Night Music Club

At the moment, I'm reading:

Charlotte Brontë's Villette

Three movies everyone should see before they die:

Shawshank Redemption

American Beauty

Planet Terror

My dream collaboration would be:

Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), because everything he touches is magic.

My alternate, non-musical vocation would be:

Cheese connoisseur extraordinaire.

If cash/logistics were no object, I would do a tour of:

The States in the early 1960s (Tom: 'Is time travel allowed?' Jo: 'Yes, it states logistics is not an object.')

The last thing I bought:

A latté with one sugar.

Most treasured bit of gear:

The old, dusty, out of tune upright piano in Jo's parents' living room that has so much character and just sounds beautiful.

Ideally, I will retire:

To a farm on the beach, with some sort of extravagant cheese-making facility next door and all my friends living in the neighbourhood. There would be raucous laughter and extended musical jams on the porch every night. And probably lots of earl grey tea.
