Plants and Animals are a rock band, the kind that still knows how to play their instruments and prefers recording with analog tape. Hailing from Montreal, the trio trio has received considerable international acclaim since the release of their 2008 full-length debut, Parc Avenue.
Warren C. Spicer and Matthew ‘the Woodman’ Woodley grew up together in Nova Scotia. Then the sea wind took them to Montreal, where they came upon Nicolas Basque, a strange francophone native that shared their love for sprawling instrumental jams and analog recording techniques. With no budget, few songs and a lot of energy, the three began a recording process that would last three years and eventually result in Parc Avenue.
Over the course of these years, the open-ended folk-jams that defined the first Plants and Animals shows began to give way to actual song structures. The layers of intertwining guitars gave way to bits of carefully orchestrated, epic rock n’ roll. And Warren Spicer actually began to sing. Parc Avenue was formed.
Since then, the group have toured relentlessly all over the world, been praised by everyone from NPR to Danger Mouse, and been nominated for a Polaris Prize and two Juno awards. Right now, they’re in the process of laying down a second lp, which, they tell us, will be made up of their finest songs to date.
