Kevin Drew is one of the founders of Canadian indie rock behemoths Broken Social Scene. As a solo artist, his work easily reconciles the contrast between the enormous and the intimate. For every gentle, snare-brushed turn. there’s a mutant, synth-freaked mash-up, an open-freeway rock anthem or celebratory group hug. On his most recent record, 2007's Spirit If..., each member of Broken Social Scene makes a contribution; it's also the first album in the history of rock music to feature guest contributions from J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Scott Kannberg (Pavement), piano master Gonzales, Joules Scott-Key (Metric), Andrew Kenny (The American Analog Set), Dave Mitchell (Do Make Say Think) and, yes, even Canadian FM-radio icon Tom Cochrane.
Drew's records are ultimately a document of his current social scene. But with his solo work, there is no anxiety about living up to expectation or coordinating everyone’s solo-career schedules. If anything, Drew's solo work represents a return to the original BSS ethos: music made in good homes, recorded casually with whoever was around – no pressure, no deadlines, no worries, and lots of love.
