If you follow reggae music and it's related hybrids in Aotearoa and Australia, chances are you've heard of Sydney's Budspells. Budspells' core members, MC Kye and producer Ants, both originally hail from New Zealand, but both now call Sydney's Bondi Beach home. MC Kye moved to Australia 17 years ago, and made a name for himself singing with a number of reggae and hip hop bands in Sydney, including the Wicked Beat Sound System. His partner, Ants, cut his studio teeth in the UK and then in NZ, where he worked with the likes of Mu (Fat Freddie's Drop), The Dental Records crew and the supergroup Bong Master.
In 2005, the duo formed a strong alliance with Salmonella Dub and the Dub Conspiracy Music Group, which has allowed them to tour extensively and play a number of big support shows. With their infectious ragga hip-hop and reggae jungle grooves, Budspells quickly built a strong and loyal fan base in both Australia and New Zealand. In 2006, the duo released their EP ‘Inna Sences' on Dub Conspiracy, which featured the singles 'Ruckus', a grime influenced excursion featuring P.Diggsss from Shapeshifter, and underground hip-hop banger 'Feel styles', featuring Australian Hip-Hop MC Hyjack. In 2008, Budspells returned with Nomdik Souls, their debut album. A dreamy, smoked out excursion through all things bass heavy, 'Nomdik Souls was released through the Dub Conspiracy imprint under 'Ruffage Tunes', Budspells' own record label and music production company.
