Singer songwriter Bill Callahan is known to most as Smog, a now retired nom de plume under which Callahan released more than a dozen albums over almost two decades.
Beginning alone in his bedroom with a spate of tape and vinyl releases in the late 1980s, Smog grew his craft from bare-bones beginnings to a clutch of mid 90s masterpieces (Wild Love, Red Apple Falls, Knock Knock) that ran through elegant country, dismembered pop and arrangements entirely of his own invention. By the time he reverted to his given name, in 2007, Callahan had become known as one of America's most consistently great songwriters, a man not afraid of his own darkness, and not afraid to tell the truth. A maverick when that word still meant something. Callahan's music is born of no school other than what is in his heart and soul.
