Big Scary join Gaga
Posted: 22 December, 2009
Gaga is very happy to announce the signing of Melbourne duo Big Scary. Big Scary came into being when Tom Iansek, a strummer, and Jo Syme, a drummer, began jamming in Jo's living room. The two had fun, and thought their music sounded alright, so they decided to record a few songs and form a band they called Big Scary, even though, with only two of them, it's not that big, or scary. Together, Tom and Jo make vital, dexterous music that runs through jangly, fuzzed out pop, wistful acoustic balladry and intricate, pastoral piano, all of it possessed of a spark and deftness of touch that belies the short time the two have been making noise.
Big Scary started to prick up some ears when Apple Song, a propulsive slab of hook-laden pop from the group’s six-song demo, picked up spot rotation on Triple J, and was featured twice on the Unearthed website. Soon after, the band released a four-song mini-ep, which was loved by pretty much everyone who heard it, including Richard Kingsmill, who awarded the track This Weight 5/5. Beat joined the chorus, making the mini-ep single of the week, and calling the band ‘talented and fearless.’
The band’s latest single, Hey Somebody, was launched in November 2009, and will also feature on the duo’s forthcoming EP, which will be released in February of 2010. Hey Somebody became single of the week in Beat, with Simone from Beat calling it ‘seriously good shit, packed with anxiety and bravado’. At Defamer, Jess McGuire admitted she was ‘currently losing her shit’ over the b-side ‘Satisfy Me’. It's the kind of music that only expletives can do justice to.
In 2010, the duo are looking to create something they call 'Big Scary's "The Four Seasons"': new music in every season and launches at left-of-centre venues. Stay tuned for details. In the meantime, you can catch Big Scary on 9 January at the Great Britan Hotel in Melbourne. For more dates and songs, and to buy some of their music for yourself, head on over to their myspace.
