Big Scary Get Wintry, Tour With Little Red
Posted: 29 June, 2010
If there was any doubt, the last week has made it official: winter has arrived, with a spate of bitingly cold winds and temperatures that make you want to head inside, pull on your woollens, make some soup and hunker down for a few months. Happily, you can now do all that with a beautifully wintry new offering from prolific Melbourne duo Big Scary.
With their last seasonal release, the excellent, rousing Autumn, still all over the airwaves, Big Scary today announced the release of the Winter instalment. Generously, they've made the ep's first single, Thinking About You, available as a free download. The ep was recorded during the first days of winter with producer Matt Voigt at drummer Jo Syme's mother's house, where they had use of an old upright piano. It features a suitably toned down palette, with sparser instrumentation and ethereal, haunting vocals from singer/guitarist Tom Iansek.
The single, Thinking About You, is perfect winter music: a sleepy, instantly hummable melody, a shuffling rhythm and a mournful vocal, all of it building to a gentle catharsis. Have a listen below. It's another great single from one of the city's most consistent, industrious bands.
To hear the rest of the tracks on the limited edition, three-song ep, head over to Big Scary's online store. For those who'd like to catch the songs live, you'll soon get the chance: in July, Big Scary are lighting out on a tour with retro-pop outfit Little Red, who have just released a single of their own, the slyly infectious Rock It. They'll then be heading around the country in support of American indie-rockers Midlake, before they return home for two sit down shows in Melbourne and Sydney in August to launch the Winter ep.
Here are the dates:
